Over the past several months, we completed an analysis of how divorce lawyers appear in AI-powered search tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity across Monmouth and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey.
One goal of this analysis was to move beyond the general advice that firms should simply “be everywhere online.β Itβs true that law firms that appear consistently in AI tools typically maintain strong websites, positive reviews, consistent business information, widespread citations and mentions, and engage in many of the same optimizations that have traditionally contributed to SEO success.
But by examining the digital footprint of divorce lawyers within a specific local market, we hoped to identify patterns that may be particularly relevant to the legal profession and, potentially, to county-level legal markets such as Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. While some of our findings may apply broadly, others appear tied to the unique geographic and professional signals that influence visibility within local legal communities.
Our Approach
To conduct this analysis, we performed multiple searches in private browsing mode using Google Chrome. We tested a variety of prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity, including:
- Who are the best divorce lawyers in Monmouth [or MIddlesex] County, New Jersey?
- Who are the best divorce lawyers in [town], New Jersey?
- Which divorce lawyers near me are most highly recommended?
- Which divorce attorneys near me have experience handling high-net-worth divorces?
- Which divorce attorneys near me are known for handling complex divorce cases involving significant assets and business interests?
We identified three categories of firms:
- Firms that consistently appeared across all three platforms
- Firms that appeared inconsistently across platforms
- Firms that rarely or never appeared
Once these firms were identified (about 43 in total), we conducted a qualitative review of their digital presence. We compared firms against one another to better understand what characteristics were shared among the most visible firms and what factors appeared to correlate with stronger AI visibility.
Important Disclaimer
AI systems are dynamic and results can change over time. Different users, locations, prompts, and platform updates may produce different outcomes. The observations below should be viewed as correlations rather than definitive causal factors.
1. Geographic Signals Matter
One of the strongest patterns we observed involved geographic signals.
Just as traditional SEO distinguishes between “near me” searches and broader regional searches, AI systems appear to differentiate between town-level and county-level authority.
For example, a firm may appear consistently when users search for divorce lawyers in a specific town but fail to appear when users search for divorce lawyers in the county as a whole.
One particularly interesting correlation we discovered involved local county bar association citations and visibility in county-level recommendations.
References to the Monmouth or Middlesex county bar associations appear to help AI systems establish geographic relevance and reinforce the connection between an attorney and a specific county.
At a minimum, law firms should ensure that county bar association memberships are accurately reflected on their website, attorney biographies, and legal directory profiles.
Even better, attorneys should actively participate in bar association events and activities that generate citations on county bar association websites, newsletters, and social media channels.
2. Legal Directory Coverage Appears Correlated With Visibility
Another clear pattern involved legal directory coverage.
Many of the firms that appeared most consistently across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity maintained profiles on a broad range of legal and business directories.
Among the directories that appeared most frequently associated with visible firms were:
- Justia
- FindLaw
- Avvo
- Super Lawyers
Just as important as being present was maintaining complete and consistent profiles. Complete attorney biographies and detailed practice area descriptions appeared to strengthen authority signals across platforms.
Law firms should also ensure their NAP information (Name, Address, Phone Number) is consistent across all profiles. Consistency helps AI systems connect references from multiple sources and build confidence in the accuracy of the information.
Reviews across various platforms may also play an important role. Many visible firms had accumulated reviews not only on their Google Business Profile but across multiple third-party platforms, such as Avvo.
3. Attorney Authority Appears To Matter
Beyond firm-level signals, attorney-level authority appeared to play a significant role in visibility.
Many of the attorneys who appeared most consistently across AI platforms demonstrated stronger authority signals than their peers.
Examples included:
- Publishing articles and educational content
- Speaking at legal conferences and events
- Active involvement in bar associations
- Media appearances and citations
- Professional awards and recognitions
These signals help establish expertise and credibility across the broader web.
AI systems appear to draw from a wide range of sources when evaluating who should be recommended for a particular query. The more evidence available demonstrating an attorney’s expertise, the easier it becomes for AI systems to identify that attorney as a trusted authority.
This is particularly important because many attorneys focus almost exclusively on their website while neglecting external authority signals. In many cases, authority is built just as much through off-site activity as it is through on-site content.
4. Visibility Is Fragmented
One of the more compelling observations from our research is that AI visibility remains highly fragmented.
When we examined informational searches related to divorce, particularly around sub-practice areas, we found surprisingly little consensus among AI platforms regarding who the authoritative sources were.
For example, prompts related to topics such as:
- High-net-worth divorce
- Divorce mediation
- Collaborative divorce
- Complex asset division
- Business owner divorce
often generated different sources and recommendations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity.
In many cases, there was no single attorney or law firm consistently cited as the leading authority on a particular topic.
This creates a significant opportunity for law firms.
Many attorneys have a single practice area page or a handful of blog posts covering these subjects. Yet AI systems appear to be searching for signals that demonstrate genuine expertise and authority.
A law firm that commits to building comprehensive resources around a particular area of divorce law has an opportunity to become strongly associated with that topic over time.
For example, a firm focusing on high-net-worth divorce could create:
- Comprehensive practice area content
- Educational articles
- FAQs
- Case studies
- Videos
- Media commentary
- Directory profiles emphasizing that expertise
The same approach could be applied to mediation, collaborative divorce, executive divorces, business-owner divorces, or virtually any other sub-specialty.
At least today, AI systems do not appear to have firmly established authorities for many of these topics in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. Firms that invest in becoming genuine subject-matter experts may have an opportunity to shape that perception before the landscape becomes more competitive.
Conclusion
Our review of how divorce lawyers appear across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties, NJ revealed four recurring themes:
- Geographic signals matter.
- Legal directory coverage appears correlated with visibility.
- Attorney authority plays an important role.
- Visibility remains fragmented, creating opportunities for specialization.
While AI search continues to evolve rapidly, these patterns appeared consistently throughout our research and provide useful direction for law firms seeking greater visibility in AI-powered search experiences.
We’ll continue conducting research across additional legal markets throughout New Jersey and beyond as we work to better understand how law firms can improve their visibility in the next generation of search.
